Just Before 2016!

2016-new-year-ss-1920Seems just like yesterday when 2015 was a brand new year and people all around the world celebrated the cross over from the past year into the “New Year”. Well, we are at that point once again when virtually everyone earnestly anticipates the birth of another New Year! Of a truth, the year 2015 brought its share of highs and lows, laughter and tears, failures and success etc. This period should generally be a time to retreat, reflect over the year and make plans for the coming year. However, people sometimes get so caught up in the end of year rush and may easily forget to prepare for the forthcoming year.

At the beginning of every year, it is a common occurrence for people to make resolutions and set goals to be achieved within the year. Although these goals or resolutions may not necessarily hold so much importance for some as they could be mere rituals. For others, it may provide a sense of direction for the entire year.

How much of your goals have you achieved so far?

At this point and time, it is very important to have a deep reflection on what your 2015 was like, recount your achievements for the year and the impact you made however little it may seem.

  • Outline those goals that are yet to be achieved

And how many pending goals do you have left?

Kudos to you if you were able to achieve over 50% of your set goals for the year and if you achieved ALL your set goals, then you probably deserve a medal. However, if peradventure, you could not achieve so much of your goals, well no need to cry over spilled milk. It simply indicates that there is a need for re-strategizing. Failure to achieve our set goals for the year could be as a result of so many factors such as:

  • Procrastination
  • Fear
  • Discouragement
  • Lack of proper planning
  • Setting unrealistic goals

Remember, it all starts with YOU! Now that the above have been identified, the next line of action is simply;

  • Avoid procrastinating in 2016. Make your plans and set a time frame for it/them and ensure to reward your success at every level of achievement.
  • Face your fears by delving into action. The worst that can happen is that you will fail at it, but how about we look at the best that can happen, which is that you will be successful at it!
  • Be courageous in the New Year by tapping into more sources of encouragement such as having a role model and believing in yourself.
  • Ensure that you plan adequately for every set goal. It will also be of great help to have a plan B.
  • Make your goals as realistic and achievable as possible.

Hurray!!! It’s that special time of the year again. The end of the year that is associated with lots of activities and festivities. For some people, it is a time to reunite with family and friends, for some others, it is a time to reflect over the year and review set goals while for another group of people, it is a time to celebrate and be thankful for the year. It is said that poor planning precedes poor performance while proper planning prevents poor performance. We all want to achieve good results in life but not everybody is ready to do the needful- which is to plan properly. A plan is generally a diagram or list/outline of steps with timing and resources, used to achieve a desired goal. It is the road-map to achieving set goals. Having set your goals, you have to draw up a plan towards achieving each one of them. It’s like this; a goal is “what” you want to achieve while a plan is “how” to get the results! For instance, a student sets a goal to obtain a score of 90-100 % in his exams, he must be able to plan towards it strategically; he may decide to increase time spent studying, join study groups or get study aids so as to hit his target at the end of his exams. If your target is to lose some weight, you may need to draw up a weight loss plan like substituting unhealthy foods for healthier ones, eating more fruits and vegetables adding more physical activities to your daily routine and exercising more often. More specifically, this plan must be drawn step by step.

Making the most of the holiday

happy holidaysThe holidays are here already and for some of us, it is a passport to work and more work. Sometimes it may be difficult to take time out to rest especially if one is a workaholic. This can be dangerous to one’s health and  relationships. Having time for self and others is an important part of life and should be set as top priority on our to do list. However, it is common place to see many work round the clock, in the name of making more money. It is true that there is so much to do, but someone once said that the best time to relax is when you feel you have no time for it. It is therefore paramount that you rest and create time to relax, so as to prevent the harmful effects of stress as we saw in our last series.

The year 2014 brought with it a number of good and bad times, and as the year slowly inches to an end, it would be beneficial to hibernate for some days.  Here are 10 ways  you can explore making the most of the holiday season:

1. Spend time with family

Interpersonal interaction has a therapeutic effect on our emotional health especially when with loved ones. It brings a  sense of calm, peace and love. You feel at home and secure when with your family.

2. Go to the beach

A trip to a natural and serene environment can do your body and mind a lot of good. Either with loved ones or by yourself, you can ease a lot of stress by enjoying the cool air at the beach.Relax

3. Visit a spa.

Why not give yourself a treat to a spa this season.  You may  go out to one or you can create one yourself at home.  Get a massage which can help reduce, stress, headaches, pain and anxiety.

4. Practice relaxation techniques.

Breath in. Breath out.

This simple mantra has tremendous benefits. Relaxation technique works by counteracting the effects of a stress response. While stress activates the sympathetic nervous system in a fight or flight response, relaxation activates the parasympathetic nervous system and brings the body back to normal.

5. Surprise yourself

Surprise? While it may seem impossible to surprise oneself, you can decide to get yourself a gift. For all the hard work during the year, you sure deserve that one thing you really desire. Don’t wait for anyone to get it for you. Show yourself some love.

6. Do something you are passionate about.

This holiday, engage in an activity that you have always wanted to do however productive. This can be singing, writing, participating in a sport, traveling, learning to knit, play an instrument, etc.

7. Keep a positive attitude, be happy!.

Laughter they say is the best medicine. Having a positive outlook to life is crucial in combating stress. When you are optimistic, then it is not likely that the slightest obstacle will dampen your day. Always keep a cheery smile on your face.

When stress weakens you, exercise invigorates and energizes you. It improves your concentration level, makes you alert enough to perform the day’s activities and what’s more, it refreshes you. Consider doing it regularly for at least 10 minutes each day this holiday.

9. Get enough sleep.

This holiday, you would do well to ensure you get adequate sleep for at least 7 to 9 hours. Lack of sleep has been linked to hypertension, increased production of stress hormones.

10. Plan ahead.2015

As the new year approaches one way to ensure a stress free 2015 will be to plan ahead. Management of time, resources, setting goals and priorities are important in ensuring a life that is free of stress.
